Related\nTerms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.&nbsp; Revelation has to do with the communication\nof truth that cannot be otherwise discovered; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a.\nInspiration has to do with the recording of revealed truth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. We can\nhave revelation without inspiration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lectures in Systematic Theology\n1. Revelation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can have\nrevelation without inspiration, as has been the case with many of the godly\npeople in the past. This is clear from the fact that John heard the seven\nthunders utter their voices, but was not permitted to write what they said\n(Rev. 10:3f.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">c. We may\nalso have inspiration without direct revelation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lectures in Systematic Theology\n1. Revelation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may also\nhave inspiration without direct revelation, as when the writers set down what\nthey had seen with their own eyes or discovered by research (Luke 1:1\u20134; 1 John\n1:1\u20134)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lectures in Systematic Theology 1. Revelation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John, on the other hand, received much of the Revelation by\ndirect revelation from God. Both men were inspired in the penning of their\nmaterial, but the material was received in different manners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Peter 1:21 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but\nholy men of God spake <em>as they were<\/em> moved by the Holy Ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All scripture <em>is<\/em> given by inspiration of God, and <em>is<\/em>\nprofitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in\nrighteousness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2.&nbsp; Inspiration. Inspiration has to do with the\nrecording of the truth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Acts 1:16 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men <em>and<\/em>\nbrethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost\nby the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them\nthat took Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Authority.\nThe Bible carries with it the divine authority of God. It is binding upon\nman\u2014on his mind, conscience, will, and heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. Inerrancy\n&#8211; It is without error in the original manuscripts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a. It is\ninerrant in all that it affirms, whether in historical, scientific, moral, or\ndoctrinal matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. Inerrancy\nextends to all of Scripture and is not limited to certain teachings of\nScripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5. Illumination\n&#8211; The one who inspired men in the writing of Scripture, illumines the minds of\nthose who read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Romans 1:21 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because that,\nwhen they knew God, they glorified <em>him<\/em> not as God, neither were\nthankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was\ndarkened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ephesians 4:18 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having the\nunderstanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the\nignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ephesians 1:18 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eyes of\nyour understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his\ncalling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B.\nInadequate Theories of Inspiration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>1.<\/em> Natural inspiration or the intuition\ntheory. \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a.\nInspiration is merely a superior insight on the part of natural man. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. It is\nmerely the intensifying and elevating of the religious perceptions of the\nwriter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>2.<\/em> <em>The dynamic or partial-inspiration\ntheory<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a. God\nsupplied the ability needed for the trustworthy transmission of the truth which\nthe writers of Scripture were commissioned to deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b.&nbsp; This made authors infallible in matters of\nfaith and practice, but not in things which are not of an immediately religious\ncharacter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All\nscripture <em>is<\/em> given by inspiration of God, and <em>is<\/em> profitable for\ndoctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>3.<\/em> <em>The theory that the thoughts, not\nthe words, are inspired<\/em>. &#8211; God suggested the thoughts of the revelation,\nbut left it up to man to put the revelation into words<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which things\nalso we speak, not in the words which man\u2019s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy\nGhost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>4.<\/em> <em>The theory that the Bible\ncontains the Word of God<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a. The Bible\nis a human book which God can make his Word at the moment of personal\nencounter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. The\nwriters of Scripture wrote of their encounters with God in thought patterns of\ntheir day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">c. These\nauthors incorporated into their writings various supernatural myths and\nmiraculous tales to convey spiritual truths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">d. The\ninterpreter\u2019s job is to strip away all the mythical embellishments and seek to\narrive at the spiritual truth God has for us<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>5.<\/em> <em>The dictation theory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a.&nbsp; Holds that the authors of Scripture were mere\npens, amanuenses, not beings whose individualities were preserved and somehow\npressed into service in the act of inspiration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. On this\nview the style is that of the Holy Spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">c. This\ntheory ignores the manifest differences in the style of Moses, David, Peter,\nJames, John, and Paul, for example<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. The\nBiblical Doctrine of Inspiration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.\nInspiration is inexplicable<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Inspiration,\nin this restricted sense, is limited to the authors of Scripture. Other books\nare not inspired in the same sense<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.\nInspiration is essentially guidance. The Holy Spirit supervised the selection\nof the materials to be used and the words to be employed in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. The Holy\nSpirit preserved the authors from all error and from all omission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5.\nInspiration extends to the words, not merely to the thoughts and concepts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6.\nInspiration is extended only to the original autographs<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Definition of Inspiration A.
